I don't spend as much time with the kids at the daycare these days, so the little kid posts have been fewer and farther between. In fact, the last time I wrote one of these was a little over four years ago. As it so happens, many of the kids have been fairly young, so they haven't exactly been good at providing quote-worthy sound bites.
However, they are still people, albeit little ones. That means that they have little personalities, little motivations, and do little things. And it's fun as all heck to watch those little people do those things. It's just plain awesome sometimes.
In this case, one of the little munchkins is at about the age where he's learning to move around. He's got control of his head, he can sit up, and he's curious. That set of conditions tends to lead to bucking around and jolting in an attempt to get at things in one's general vicinity. After all, you're stable, and you've got things you want to see and touch.
Unsurprisingly, he very quickly learned to crawl. It helps that the daycare has some mats to pad any potential falls, so it encouraged experimentation. Either way, the munchkin was then able to crawl around and explore more of his environment. Remember, though, he was still a curious kid, so now he just had more tools in his tool belt to facilitate his curiosity. That kid was crawling around trying to touch everything.
So, why is all that amusing, you ask? Sure, it's all very heartwarming and fun to watch, but I'm not sure I'd argue that it's particularly funny.
Well, this kid learned to crawl on a Wednesday afternoon. I kid you not, by about Thursday, he was trying to stand up. He went from roughly stationary to crawling to trying to walk in the span of about 48 hours. I didn't just hear about it, either, I saw it first-hand. When his mom came to pick him up, I mentioned that he was trying to stand and arguably walk around. She nonchalantly replied that she noticed he'd started doing that the day before (I was there on a Friday).
Yup, this kid went through a good chunk of the cycle in less than three days. When's the last time you learned anything that fast? Keep in mind, these are fundamental skills like crawling and walking. It'd be like learning how to type on a keyboard where the keys are all jumbled up, despite having no prior experience with said keyboard. That's what this kid managed.
I think I may have found the next kid that I need to be nice to, just in case he grows up to take over the world.
