Dancing is one of those activities that brings out a lot of emotion. It can be a source of some trepidation, it can be rewarding, and it can inspire happiness in other people (in some cases, all in the same night). For other people, they just straight up like to dance, and you can see pure joy on their faces when they do it. If you've ever seen a group of people dancing in a circle, you know what I mean. There's usually laughter, and occasionally, someone busts out a move that draws a collective gasp of amusement. Basically, no one really dances with a stoic look on their face. One way or the other, you get something. That makes it prime for some mild amusement.
As it turns out, though, the old school dance moves tend to be especially prone to providing some amusement. One of the funniest things I've ever heard came from a guy a little older than me referring said dance moves.
First, a little background detail: we were both volunteering at a gym to help with logistics during a weekend competition. As a result, we ended up watching the competitors during their heats, so we definitely started noticing who was doing well. One competitor was very notable because he was 1) doing well, 2) very young, and 3) pretty darn strong for his age. The comment revolved around this young competitor, and made me bust out laughing right away.
Random volunteer: "Dang, that kid lifts as much as I do."
Older volunteer: "Yeah, but have him meet me on the dance floor, and I'll show him some of the old school dance moves. What's he know about that?"
The whole thing still makes me laugh to this day. Just imagine this guy throwing down the gauntlet by busting out the running man or the Roger Rabbit.
Speaking of those dance moves, the Mild Wife and I recently noticed that the music video for the Bruno Mars & Cardi B remix of the song "Finesse" was a tribute to that era. We both had a good time watching it, and it's gotten quite a bit of airtime in our apartment. I think I also played it for most of a morning at work (I wear headphones). It's a catchy song, but the music video really gives it that old school vibe that we enjoy.
Since it was fresh on our minds, one of us happened to make an off-hand comment about it at dance class. Want to guess what they immediately played over the speakers? Heck, there was even an impromptu lesson on the running man. I'm not sure I can adequately describe how much laughter happened in those few moments. Let's just say that the instructor we were working with said she'd keep the song in mind for future reference.
The moral from all of that, kids, is to make sure you can bust out the running man at the drop of a hat. Trust me, it'll be worth it.
