As I've pointed out before, the Mild Wife is amused by the fact that I am nerdier than she is. Her short-hand for it is, simply, that I "like Star Trek." Of course, she still encourages this particular habit of mine, although sometimes she does so unintentionally. For one, it doesn't really do any harm, and for another, she's just encouraging me to partake in my hobbies.
Now, that isn't to say that she doesn't appreciate this particular fandom at all. For all that she teases me, there are still things that she wants to partake in. One good example of this is the movie, "The Matrix." She knows full well that it's one of those movies that has a bit of a following, so she has some interest in watching that movie (it certainly doesn't hurt that I've talked it up a bit). So, we've resolved to watch this movie so that she can partake in that particular bit of nerdom (for the record, the Internet says that's a word).
The other movie that fell into that category was the first "The Lord of the Rings" movie that came out, "The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring." That movie won a bunch of awards, and it was a bit of a cultural phenomenon at the time that it was released. And to her credit, the Mild Wife wanted to partake in this phenomenon at the time. However, it was the last movie that she watched during a movie marathon with her family, so she promptly fell asleep after the first few minutes. I actually don't hold that against her, since I'd probably have done the same thing. Still, the net result was that she didn't actually watch the movie.
Well, as it so happens, that particular movie is available on Netflix, so we made a movie night out of it. This time around, we made sure to hydrate and get rest before we started the film. Basically, we were intent on finishing the movie. Luckily, our plan worked out great; the Mild Wife not only stayed awake through the whole movie, she enjoyed it.
In fact, she probably got into it more than I expected. At several points in the movie, she started yelling out advice to the characters in the movie. It won't really ruin anything to know that Frodo is one of the main characters and that he plays a pivotal role, so his well-being is important to the plot line. Given that, she would occasionally exclaim things like, "no! Don't lose track of Frodo!" to the other characters in the movie. It was actually quite amusing as a contrast to "oh Lord! You're watching Star Trek!" (see that first link in this blog post if you want to read the back-story for that quote).
All in all, we both enjoyed the movie quite thoroughly, and I got some extra entertainment in the process. Not bad for one of those classic nerdy movies.
