Wrong Way

Okay, so let's start out with a few facts. First off, I get up pretty early on the weekdays. It's a fact I've mentioned on this blog a few times (my favorite is still the time when I got accused of stealing my own car), so if you've been reading for a while, then it should come as no surprise. The other fun fact about me is that I don't use the snooze button. I think I've hit the snooze button something like twice in my life, and both times, it was entirely by accident. I actually remember having to run back to my room to turn off the alarm because I was already up, and I didn't realize that I had hit the snooze button instead of the "turn off" button.

Given these two facts, I have gotten very used to waking up early and I'm not usually late to work. I'm not complaining, mind you, but that's just how things have conspired in this case. It's actually worked out in my benefit, and I'm glad that's how things worked out.

So let me throw two more facts into the mix. I like to stay active, so I usually make myself go to the gym after work (wouldn't you, if going to classes meant cracking up all the time?). This also means that I occasionally leave work late enough for the toll to change on the Bay Bridge (and witness the ten minute rush hour immediately following said change). So, I would often leave work and pay $6 instead of $4 because I crossed the bridge a few minutes before the toll dropped.

Well, if it works for people to change their clocks by a few minutes so that they're not late, why not change my clock by a few minutes so I'm not early? It's not like it would cause me any problems in the morning, since I'm so used to my routine that I'll get to work on time no matter what. I don't use the snooze button, remember? As long as I get up when my cell phone alarm goes off, I'm more or less sure to get to work on time. Sure, I realize that it's a little weird, but I figured it might save me a few dollars every now and then. So, I moved the time on my car's clock backwards by a few minutes.

Now, I actually did this a few years ago, and I'd forgotten all about it. Sure, the clock still has the updated time, but I don't think about it any more. I just get in the car and drive. I wouldn't have even written about it, except for I gave a couple of friends a ride recently. See, we were running late, and we were trying to figure out how late we would be. At one point, one of them looked at the clock in the car, and she got very confused.

I had to explain myself at that point, and you should've seen the look on their faces. There was a lot of laughter. Let's just say that that they were highly amused. In fact, one of them said, "you're the ONLY person I know who sets their clock backwards." That was then followed up by some combination of words that roughly meant, "what the heck?" Then that was followed up by a whole lot more laughter.

Why yes, I am apparently the only person who sets their clock the wrong way. I lead a rough life.

New York City Trip (Day 3)

By the third day of the trip, I was tired enough from the previous day's adventures/subway rides that I felt like sleeping in. And sleep in I did. I think I woke up at something like 11:30 or noon. Of course, that meant that a later start to the day, which started the vicious cycle all over again. By the time we rolled into Manhattan, it was about two in the afternoon. I had tentatively set aside Sunday to see something on Broadway, so we headed over to the tkts booth for discount tickets. There were actually various 3PM options, and after mulling our options, we figured it'd be a good idea to catch one of those. We settled on The Toxic Avenger , which was actually an off-Broadway option. However, we hadn't eaten yet, and the show started about 15 minutes after we got our tickets. Enter the food carts. There happened to be one right outside the theater, and the guy charged a little bit of a premium for the convenience. Still, I was hungry, and I had yet to try...

Sick Days 2

I've mentioned before that getting sick is a source of amusement for me, largely because of the kids and the reactions I get from people at work. Well, it looks like I underestimated just how much laughter illness can cause. Yup, the whole process of getting sick managed to generate some (mild) amusement. First of all, my brother got a pretty bad case of strep throat, so he had to miss some time at work. He is also around kids quite a bit, so it's not uncommon for one of those "vectors of infection" he works with to get him sick in some way, shape, or form. In this case, he managed to contract a case of strep throat. His supervisor, however, was far more concerned about the work schedule than the fact that he had a really high fever and could not keep himself out of bed. She said she was going to make him come in later that day (to which he roughly said, "you're not understanding. I cannot come in to work today."), and then she insisted on a doctor...

Where Do I Go?

As the days of COVID-19 are dragging on, we are having to make more adjustments to our usual routines. Some of these changes are so mundane that I haven't mentioned them at all in this blog, while others have lead to some pretty funny anecdotes . That's probably par for the course, since you wouldn't expect a global pandemic to be all giggles. As it turns out, however, not all of the anecdotes happen to us directly. Having to socially distance and remotely do things has actually led to at least one goofy episode that we found out from afar. You see, it was our niece's birthday recently, but we couldn't visit her because of the aforementioned social distancing. So, we figured we'd ship her a present and call her on her birthday. We couldn't be there in person, but we could still wish her well and try to make her feel special on her birthday. Given that shipping times have been erratic the last few months, we ordered the present with plenty of time, and it arr...
