This story starts, as many of mine do, with a conversation. Specifically, I was chatting over IM with a coworker buddy of mine. We were talking about a bunch of stuff, though most of it was work related (no surprise there). Of course, the whole thing took a very interesting turn that made us both laugh.
Without giving away the details, this friend had a bit of a complicated decision to make. I'm not exactly the most knowledgable in that particular area, but I at least knew what he was talking about. I'm also halfway decent at listening to stuff (as I like to say, I do a halfway decent impression of a wall), so the conversation went smoothly enough.
At some point about halfway through, this exchange happened:
Him: "Man, I wish I didn't agonize about this stuff so much."
Me: "Meh, it happens. We all have our quirks."
Him: "Oh yeah? What's yours?"
Me: "Haha. Take your pick. There's a bunch."
Yup, we all have our little habits that make us who we are. I have my own set, and I just so happen to some interesting ones. If you want to see any of them on display, pick any arbitrary post on this blog. There's always an example of some failing of mine or a mental monologue that causes hilarity. It's not particularly hard to find something.
Anyhow, the conversation moved on, and we were talking about something much lighter in nature. That's what led to the next bit:
Him: "Do you watch much TV?"
Me: "Nah. I don't actually own a TV. Or a microwave."
Him: "Whaaaaat?"
Him: "Double whaaaat"
Him: "Okay, so quirk found."
Yup, apparently that's my quirk. The Mild Fiancée and I made a decision when we moved in that we weren't going to get a TV. We don't really watch tons of it to begin with, but we can also get away with using something like Netflix to watch the little TV that we do care about. All in all, it's not like we miss it.
The microwave was a slightly longer discussion, but at the end of the day, we don't need it. We don't ever cook ready-made meals in the microwave, so it's not like we absolutely need it. Reheating leftovers was the one case that made us reconsider this decision, but at the end of the day, we decided we could just as easily use a toaster oven or a pan to reheat food. After all, it had likely been cooked that way in the first place, so there's nothing saying that we can't reheat it that way. If we want heat to be evenly applied, we just put the lid on the pan. Voila.
Still, I can understand where he's coming from. It's not exactly a common decision. Ergo, quirk. Hi, may name is Sam and I don't own a TV or a microwave.
