If you've ever watched any of the American sports, you're likely to have seen a spin move. Essentially, you spin around in order to avoid a defender. When used properly, it can leave a defender chasing after air (like so) and give you a practically unimpeded path to the basket/end zone. It's one of those things that's incredibly fun to watch when it's executed properly.
Now, for some reason or another, it has always come to mind whenever I see someone walking towards me. I fully recognize that the Mild Wife is not trying to tackle me when she's trying to walk past me to the room, but my brain still thinks "spin move!" whenever she's walking towards me. I can't quite explain the rationale for it, but that's just what my brain thinks.
I suspect that I've ended up trying to walk past someone and we've both side-stepped to the same side one too many times. I'm fairly sure you've had it happen to you, too. You both mean well, so you try to step to the side so that the other person can get by. However, if you both guess the same side, you can end up right back where you started in some sort of polite stand-off. In my mind, the solution to this is to fake in one direction, twirl your body in 360 degrees to shift your momentum, and then continue on your merry way.
Well, every now and then, if I'm feeling particularly silly, I will actually do this. I have, on occasion, done a spin move past the Mild Wife when we were walking in opposite directions. However, it's not just that I will do the spin move, I will also call it out as I walk past. It's sort of like those kung fu movies where they call out the names of their special attacks as they do them ("Hidden tiger strike!" or some such thing).
I chuckle to myself as I do it, too. I mean, c'mon: I'm gyrating just so I can get to the other side of the room, for absolutely no reason other than I think it's amusing. I can't really tell how the Mild Wife reacts as I actually do this (the physics of this move make it hard for me to see her face), but I suspect there may be one of those "aiyah" type faces.
Lastly, I think the funniest thing about this whole thing is that I went looking for spin move videos or GIF's, and I came across a scene in "The Office" where one of the characters does this as he's running through the office. Apparently I'm not the only one who has this thought cross his mind. Vindication!
