New York City Trip (Day 4)

The last full day of the trip. It felt a little bit like the last full day, because the plan was to intentionally keep it low-key. Case in point: we decided to finally eat in Chinatown, just to compare against the Chinese food to which we're accustomed. I'd actually heard that Chinese food in NYC wasn't very good, so I was morbidly curious. Let's just say I don't entirely disagree with what I've heard. It could have been the place we went, but I think I'm sticking to other cuisines the next I'm out there.

I had another high school friend who happened to be in Manhattan for the day, so we planned on meeting up. We had a little bit of time to kill, though, so we headed over to the UN building. I saw the line of flags, so I had to go find the two that are important to me: Peru & China. I found Peru fairly quickly, but trying to take a picture of the flag billowing in the wind proved to be problematic. And some tourist interrupted me just when I thought I'd get it, so it took even longer. The Chinese flag took a little longer to find, but worse than that, it was in a shaded part near some trees. So no matter how much the wind picked up, the flag just hung there. They did that intentionally, I bet you. Punks.

Anyhow, we finally met up with my friend at NYU after a little bit of goofing off. We had Korean food for dinner at this place called Mill Korean, but that wasn't the interesting part. We had a fairly academic discussion about theology and fairly abstract concepts, which let me nerd out for a bit. Then the fun started. She started describing her cat, and how expensive it is. Mind you, this is because she feeds it high end meatball things that give it the nutrition it needs. That led to a little bit of teasing. I forget how, but somehow, she admitted that she also feeds it Vaseline so it doesn't cough up hairballs. The cheap Vaseline, at that. That led to more teasing.

After grabbing frozen yogurt place for dessert, we parted ways. Mind you, we'd had a late lunch, had eaten dinner in the last 30 minutes, and just finished dessert. So what did my travel companion want to do? Get dessert at Veniero's Pasty Shop. It's supposed to be a well-known spot, so I figured, why not? I got some (NY) cheesecake that I liked, so it turned out to be a good call.

Okay, so second dessert down. What now? More food. We went to that Taiwanese place that we had tried to check out on a previous night, Saint Alp's Teahouse. My buddy had been there before on a previous trip, which meant it was apparently good enough to warrant a return trip. Normally, I would've been stoked, but I had just had dinner and two desserts in a short span of time. Amazingly enough, he kept on trucking. He ordered more than I did, and kept snacking away. I liked the food, but I had to eat slowly & not eat as much.

And with that, we called it a night. We were both flying out in the afternoon the next day, but we were concerned about rush hour traffic. So, we figured we'd realistically have lunch, and then call it a day. There was but half a day left.

All Good Things ...

August 8, 2009. Over twelve years ago, I started blogging with this simple post . I didn't really have a great reason for starting the blog, other than I wanted to try it out. I wanted to try writing and putting it where others could read it. I don't know, it just seemed like a new adventure to try. Along the way, there have been all sorts of posts and all sorts of life events, but through it all, I kept writing. It just became a part of what I do at some point. It wasn't a matter of whether I was going to write a blog post, it was a matter of when. The Mild Wife has described it as a "writing practice," and it was one of the reasons why I kept writing. Honestly, it's good practice, and it gives me an opportunity to hone my craft. I'm no professional author, but we all have to write stuff in our everyday lives. Why not give yourself reps to get better at it? However, I think it's time for that practice to change. My weekly anecdotes sure kept me amused...

Dreams

Normally, I don't eat very many sweets. I tend to eat pretty generous portions, but I generally prefer savory food over sweet. In fact, I usually prefer things half as sweet when possible. My preference doesn't have anything to do with health reasons, it's just one of those things that I've always liked better. That said, I do inevitably eat dessert, particularly if I'm out with other people. My stance towards dessert is roughly equivalent to those who are social drinkers . If other people want to munch on something for dessert, I'm not about to cross my arms and refuse. That'd be just a tad gauche. So, I do eat some dessert. I even have a few standby favorites that I'll usually order when presented with them (brownies, creme brulee, and apple pie). But left to my own devices, I'm not about to go hunting for dessert. Apparently, this means that the sugar can really mess with my system under the right circumstances. As I've discovered, ...

New York City Trip (Day 1)

After my crappy flight , I was now in Newark, New Jersey at 7AM on a Friday morning. I had done a little bit of reading up, so I knew which bus I needed to take and where I was going to get off. All in all, getting into the city was surprisingly easy. I suppose speaking the language does make things simpler. Through no real planning of mine (a theme of the trip, at least on my part), I picked one of the later bus stops at which to get off, Grand Central. I actually just figured that getting off at Grand Central would give me options, and heck, it's called Grand Central. That just screamed "decent place to disembark that might be close to some stuff" to me, so that's where I got off. However, it also meant that we drove down 42 nd St to get to my bus stop. That just happens to be a big street, and it gave me a glimpse of Times Square as we drove by. My bus stop choice had accidentally given me a rough layout of the city. Go me. I had about 6 hours to kill...
