New York City Trip (Day 4)

The last full day of the trip. It felt a little bit like the last full day, because the plan was to intentionally keep it low-key. Case in point: we decided to finally eat in Chinatown, just to compare against the Chinese food to which we're accustomed. I'd actually heard that Chinese food in NYC wasn't very good, so I was morbidly curious. Let's just say I don't entirely disagree with what I've heard. It could have been the place we went, but I think I'm sticking to other cuisines the next I'm out there.

I had another high school friend who happened to be in Manhattan for the day, so we planned on meeting up. We had a little bit of time to kill, though, so we headed over to the UN building. I saw the line of flags, so I had to go find the two that are important to me: Peru & China. I found Peru fairly quickly, but trying to take a picture of the flag billowing in the wind proved to be problematic. And some tourist interrupted me just when I thought I'd get it, so it took even longer. The Chinese flag took a little longer to find, but worse than that, it was in a shaded part near some trees. So no matter how much the wind picked up, the flag just hung there. They did that intentionally, I bet you. Punks.

Anyhow, we finally met up with my friend at NYU after a little bit of goofing off. We had Korean food for dinner at this place called Mill Korean, but that wasn't the interesting part. We had a fairly academic discussion about theology and fairly abstract concepts, which let me nerd out for a bit. Then the fun started. She started describing her cat, and how expensive it is. Mind you, this is because she feeds it high end meatball things that give it the nutrition it needs. That led to a little bit of teasing. I forget how, but somehow, she admitted that she also feeds it Vaseline so it doesn't cough up hairballs. The cheap Vaseline, at that. That led to more teasing.

After grabbing frozen yogurt place for dessert, we parted ways. Mind you, we'd had a late lunch, had eaten dinner in the last 30 minutes, and just finished dessert. So what did my travel companion want to do? Get dessert at Veniero's Pasty Shop. It's supposed to be a well-known spot, so I figured, why not? I got some (NY) cheesecake that I liked, so it turned out to be a good call.

Okay, so second dessert down. What now? More food. We went to that Taiwanese place that we had tried to check out on a previous night, Saint Alp's Teahouse. My buddy had been there before on a previous trip, which meant it was apparently good enough to warrant a return trip. Normally, I would've been stoked, but I had just had dinner and two desserts in a short span of time. Amazingly enough, he kept on trucking. He ordered more than I did, and kept snacking away. I liked the food, but I had to eat slowly & not eat as much.

And with that, we called it a night. We were both flying out in the afternoon the next day, but we were concerned about rush hour traffic. So, we figured we'd realistically have lunch, and then call it a day. There was but half a day left.

Waiting for the Suck

I've mentioned it before, but I like to watch some Netflix while I do the dishes . I don't remember when I started the practice, but it's become a routine at this point. It gives me something to focus on while I do chores, and it makes the whole experience more enjoyable. All in all, it seems like a good idea to me. Now, I know that my screen time is limited. I'm certainly not going to wash dishes for two hours, so I can't watch an entire movie in one go. Heck, half the time, I can't even watch half of a movie in a single session. Ultimately, that drives my viewing preferences, so that I tend to favor episodic shows. Basically, that's how I watch some show or another: one dishwashing session at a time. Recently, that's been the Star Trek: Enterprise show. I never watched it when it first came out on television, so this is my chance to see the whole series. As with many series, there are some good episodes and some not-so-good episodes. Still, it's a...

The Joys of Coding

I normally don't blog about what I do (I'm a software developer), because 1) I've already got a work blog that's more suited for that, and 2) I'm a software developer, so most of the time it's not amusing. Sure, I find it interesting, and I learn things every day. However, unless you already lean towards Computer Science, it's not going to be very amusing to you. So, for the sake of keeping my audience (all 4 of them) happy, I stay away. Today, I'm going to break that rule, because my work actually did cause mild amusement. So, without further ado ... I've got a deadline coming up fairly soon, so I've been coding away for the last few days. It's not busy enough where I'm stressing about it, but let's just say it's a little easier to concentrate on my work these days. In it of itself, that's not news-worthy, but because I've been more productive lately, I've also been generating more working code lately. That...

Copycat

So, my sister had a kid, so I have a new baby nephew these days. He's the first in my immediate family, so there's all sorts of excitement having to do with him. We are all very excited for his parents, and we're all very excited to meet him. My parents, understandably, were the most excited of the immediate family to meet him. They were the first to spend time with my sister and my nephew, and they were quite happy about the whole thing. The funniest part, to me, was that my mom insisted that my nephew looks like me. I didn't really think much of it, since there's almost always someone who insists that family member X looks like family member Y. Of course, my mom has years and years of experience with this whole baby thing. Also, she's MY mother, so she is one of the two foremost authorities on what I looked like as a baby. Not even I can say what I looked like as a baby, so I really should've listened when she threw out that particular tidbit. In fact,...
